In 2017-18, 1 in 8 households in Canada was food insecure, amounting to 4.4 million people, including more than 1.2 million children living in food-insecure households. It is a serious problem in Canada that negatively impacts physical, mental, and social health, and costs our healthcare system considerably. Household food insecurity is the inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints. Policy action is needed to tackle this serious public health issue.
